Leeds-based Samuel Grant Packaging is delighted to announce their new collaboration with the United Bank of Carbon – a registered charity run from the University of Leeds that helps forge partnerships between businesses and international conservation initiatives.
Committed to helping companies to reduce packaging waste, and therefore their environmental impact, Samuel Grant Packaging’s consultants conduct audits of companies’ complete packaging processes. In doing this, they are able to point out potential reductions in the need for packaging; suggest leaner processes; standardise products; reduce deliveries; recycle more; and reduce waste. There is no cost for the audit.

Following the audit, and subsequent reductions in both cost and CO2 emissions caused by excessive packaging and waste, the United Bank of Carbon will suggest ways in which the financial savings could be partially invested in environmental projects both in the UK and internationally. These partnerships with environmental projects can be used to offset the company’s carbon emissions, and further raise their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) credentials.

An example of how this may look can be seen in the naming of the “Nectophrynoides deloittei” – a new Tanzanian species of frog which was named after Deloitte in recognition of their work preserving the local rainforests where the species was discovered. Deloitte were a founding member of the United Bank of Carbon.

The University of Leeds is one of the UK’s top institutions for climate research, reflected in the recent establishment of the Priestley International Centre for Climate which is headed by Professor Piers Forster and hosts more than 150 academic staff working on the physical and societal aspects of climate change. The collaboration between Samuel Grant Packaging and this prestigious team of academics marks a huge step forward for the company in their commitment to tackling the environmental impact of packaging processes.

“We could not be more pleased that academia are recognising our efforts by joining forces with us to reinforce our message – many companies are using far too much packaging and their processes are wasting their time, money, and more importantly increasing their impact on the environment” Andrew Grant, Managing Director of Samuel Grant Packaging. “We look forward to enabling our clients to reduce their impact, and also provide the link to enable them to involve themselves in the hugely worthwhile environmental research projects that Leeds University initiates.”

Piers Forster, trustee of the United Bank of Carbon and Director of the Priestley International Centre for Climate at the University of Leeds said, “Solving climate change requires urgent action. We are excited to work with Samuel Grant Packaging as it will help get Leeds’ academics out of their ivory towers to collaborate with businesses around the UK, working together to identify real world solutions. Finding solutions that protect the rainforest, help climate and bring business opportunities.”
